So a couple days back was the 200th birthday of Karl Marx. You know, the guy that thought history worked in a linear progression, the labor theory of value was correct (i.e. if I spend one hour building a computer and you spend 10 hours building a tower of dog shit, your tower of dog shit is worth 10 times more than my computer), that human's were effectively blank slates and that we could transform ourselves into completely altruistic beings that treated people we'd never met like our children and that the state would magically wither away once achieving complete power. Oh and a bunch of people in a bunch of places put his ideas into practice and killed something like a 100 million people.
Yeah, that guy. Dominic Sandbrook has a really good article showing that the atrocities of communism were not a perversion of communism, but instead the logical application of it. Indeed, he notes, "As the U.S. historian Stephen Kotkin has shown, the Soviet dictator was not a monster who happened to be a Marxist. He was a monster because he was a Marxist. As a young man, Stalin studied Marx's theories with obsessive dedication. Then, after winning power, he put them into practice." He also quotes Marx' thoughts on things like terrorism and mass murder, "There is only one way in which the murderous death agonies of the old society and the bloody birth throes of the new society can be shortened, simplified and concentrated and that way is revolutionary terror." And, "We have no compassion and we ask no compassion from you... When our turn comes, we shall not make excuses for the terror." Should it be any surprise that communists have so often been terrorists when out of power and totalitarian mass-murders when in power? I think not. And yet...
Or across the pond...
I guess Owen's is sort of a joke... maybe?
Either way, there's nothing abnormal about this on the Left these days. The New York Times published an article titled "Happy Birthday Karl Marx. You Were Right!" And The Guardian published one titled "Two centuries on, Karl Mark feels more revolutionary than ever." Medium, for its part, seems to be doing what it does and pushing more hard left nonsense by putting an article titled "Karl Marx, Prosperity Coach" to the top of my feed. And of course we got a propaganda movie about Marx last year too. (Admittedly I haven't seen it, but I suspect it left out the part of him knocking up his maid, begging for money from Engels right after his mother dies and having genital boils, though.) Not to mention a hole assortment of articles from leftwing rags such as Salon and The Rolling Stone have praised Marx, as well as as a bunch of Hollywood morons. And these assholes have the audacity to fearmonger about the rise of fascism...
